It is with great sadness that we report the passing, on 2 January 2024, of former fib T5.1 member Chris Burgoyne.
Prof. Burgoyne graduated from St. John’s College, Cambridge, before working in industry and obtaining a PhD from Imperial College on the buckling of beams and columns. He was a researcher and professor in concrete structures, for 30 years, with an academic post at the University of Cambridge since 1989. Among his many achievements, he was a world-leading expert in prestressed concrete structures and carried out pioneering work on the long-term behaviour of high strength advanced composites. A pillar of the research and industry community on FRP reinforcement for concrete, Prof. Burgoyne chaired the FRPRCS-5 conference in Cambridge and left an indelible mark through his dedicated work in the field of FRP for concrete structures and his many contributions to the fib T5.1 activities.
We will always remember Prof. Burgoyne for advocating strong interactions between academic research and industry practice, as well as for his lasting contribution to our field, and his no-nonsense, honest and passionate personality.
